It would not be unreasonable to present Azal as the favorite grape variety of the Quinta da Raza team. In fact, we are talking about a native grape variety of the Basto sub-region, which, in our view, so well expresses the vigor and character of our people and our land. Although not as prominent as other varieties, in the early 20th century, Azal was the main grape variety used in the production of white wines in the sub-region. Being a late-ripening variety, the terroir of Raza, with its remarkable sun exposure, granite soils with schist areas, and a climate characterized by a significant annual temperature range, provides ideal conditions for its development and expression of its full potential. Azal clusters are medium-sized, very compact, and heavy, with a greenish color, even at the end of maturation. The highest quality level is achieved when planted in dry and well-exposed areas. It gives rise to wines with citrus color and aromas of lime or lemon, sometimes grapefruit and green apple, not excessively intense, fine and pleasant, with a slightly acidic aftertaste. The taste is fruity with citrus notes, but also mineral; freshness is one of the hallmarks of this grape variety.
At Quinta da Raza, Azal is used in the single varietal Dom Diogo Azal – one of our most successful wines – and in Raza Branco, a blend composed of Arinto, Azal, and Trajadura. It was also used in the first edition of our Family Collection, where it revealed an until-then unknown facet: aging capacity, materialized in the exceptional results of aging in French oak barrels for a period of 12 months.
