A grape variety that gives rise to a very popular wine in Minho and the Vinho Verde Region, usually known as Espadal. In any case, its cultivation is not widespread throughout the entire wine region, concentrating in the valleys of the Lima, Cávado, Ave, and Tâmega rivers. Like Vinhão, its expression is essentially regional, not widely known outside its borders. It is considered a fairly productive grape variety, with large and long clusters, late ripening, requiring many hours of heat to mature, a tendency mitigated in our days by modern viticulture techniques and the progressive abandonment of vineyards in borders or pergolas. Some of the other names by which it is known are curious, especially in Basto, “Padeira,” but also in other areas, using names as peculiar as “Farinhoto,” “Nevoeiro,” or “Tinta dos Pobres.” The latter title may be alluding to its clear must, resulting in ruby-colored wines; it also reveals low sugar concentration and high acidity.
At Quinta da Raza, we use the Espadeiro grape variety to produce one of our most successful exports, specifically the Raza Rosé, where, blended with Vinhão and Padeiro, it creates a fresh wine with aromas of red fruits, perfect for light meals.
