Discover the Basto wine region, its nature, biodiversity, culture, wines and regional products
On this trail, you’ll walk along the old cobblestones marked by the wheels of rural ox carts until the localities that are part of a group of vernacular villages on the slopes of the Serra do Alvão, built with materials from the surrounding area, such as schist, slate, granite, thatch, wood, among others.
As you pass through the villages, you’ll see a remarkable variety of espigueiros (granaries), also known as ‘canastros’. Usually made of stone and wood, they were essentially used for drying corn. The size of the ‘espigueiro’ (granary) reveals the wealth and social status of its owners.
Once you’ve finished the Aldeias Vernaculares trail, there’s nothing better to recover your energy than taking a tour of Quinta da Raza with a commented tasting of three wines made from the native grape varieties of the Basto sub-region. Visit our facilities, admire the views of the vineyards from the panoramic terrace, and delight in the freshness and unique flavors of our Dom Diogo Azal, Dom Diogo Padeiro, and Dom Diogo Vinhão. To pair with your tasting, we’ll have a selection of organic Portuguese preserves on toast, traditional bread, and a cheese and sausage board!
