Rose wine – How is it made?

How is it made? Colored white wine? White and red grapes? Red grapes exclusively?

These frequently asked questions deserve answers!

How we produce our rosé wine.

The rosé wines from Quinta da Raza are made exclusively from red grapes. To develop them, we selected the grape varieties and the plots to plant them in order to express their best characteristics.

We have chosen red grape varieties with the potential to produce wine with nice aromas and good acidity, essential for the freshness and liveliness of the wine.

The grapes are harvested and taken to te press, the juice is then allowed to flow, it may be more or less coloured, depending on the grape. Its colour can vary from very pale pink, which is then called “onion skin“, to a darker pink, bordering on claret. These colour variations are not a sign of quality. Light or dark, rosé can be excellent, it’s just a matter of taste, but with no skin contact we aim for a light-coloured rosé.

The juice is then vinified like white wine, which means that it is kept at a low temperature and protected from air in order to preserve all of its aromas. It is already expressing its full potential a few weeks after the harvest and can be consumed in the following year.

The rosé wine from Quinta da Raza is by definition a wine of conviviality, to be drunk chilled in all circumstances and to be appreciated for its exceptional bouquet and freshness.

If relaxation is the motto, the synonym is DOM DIOGO PADEIRO. The wine is unknown to most oenophiles as the variety has been practically abandoned in the region. This wine has a soft, enveloping aftertaste and, when vinified as a rose at Quinta da Raza, expresses a high aromatic potential where strawberries and raspberries stand out.

RAZA ROSE is the pure expression of the region’s most emblematic red grape varieties, including Padeiro, Espadeiro and Vinhão. It’s an irreverent wine with a marked freshness and personality. Aromas of raspberries, watermelon and wild strawberries stand out .
