The Basto Sub-Region

The Basto Sub-region is the innermost of the Vinho Verde Region. It was created in 2001 to differentiate the wines produced in this magical place that involves several municipalities, Celorico de Basto, Mondim de Basto, Cabeceiras de Basto and Ribeira de Pena, and even two districts, Braga and Vila Real. The wines produced here are, for many years, recognized as quality wines due to the characteristics of the terroir. With an average elevation of 200 meters, the subregion comprises part of the Tamega river valley, surrounded by mountains and therefore sheltered from most of the sea winds. The climate is harsh, cold and rainy in winter and hot and dry in the summer. The soil is granite with some uncommon areas of schist and clay.

There is a lot to see in the Basto region. If you are looking to discover some wines and wish a sensorial experience, you should visit us! Quinta da Raza is located in Celorico de Basto, in the right bank of the river Tâmega, in a plateau with gentle slopes, soils of clay and schist and with a fabulous sun exposure. It is a special spot to create wines with grapes like Azal, Arinto, Padeiro and Vinhão that reflect the perfect communion between the place they are grown and the people that produce them.

A few decades ago, getting to Basto was a bit of a challenge, there were mountains to overcome and very winding roads to travel. Basto is therefore still a small paradise, away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities with many natural features like Marão and Alvão mountains with their wonderful scenarios and astonishing waterfalls, a wide variety of ancient monuments like castles, churches and bridges that also deserve your attention and you can also enjoy beautiful walks or bike rides through nature.

Basto is a region that is impatiently awaiting for your visit. Getting here is now easy and convenient. Leaving Porto, on the A4, the region is just an hour away, following the Tâmega Variante. To the north, the region is crossed by the A7/IC5, allowing you to reach us from Braga, Guimarães, Vila Real and other places through the junction in the town of Arco de Baúlhe.
