What is a blended wine?
Blending is a specific feature of many Portuguese wines. Well, believe it or not, most Portuguese wines are the result of blending. It's a technique that wine producers carry out before bottling and for some it's an art in itself. This method consists of blending wines of different varieties to obtain a blend and, therefore, the best possible wine.
At Quinta da Raza, we not only blend different grape varieties, but also different plots of the same variety. Normally, we ferment each variety separately and when all the fermentations are finished, we taste all the vats and decide where each one will go. Blending involves a lot of tasting, a lot of testing and more tasting to find the best possible wine, which is really amazing!Â

Once the batches have been defined, all that remains is to mix everything in the right proportions and proceed with bottling the wine!
Our most traditional blends are produced with the Alvarinho and Trajadura grape varieties, Avesso and Alvarinho, which we bottle under the Quinta da Raza brand, and Arinto, Azal and Trajadura, which we blend and bottle as RAZA. We also blend grapes from the same variety but from different plots to produce our DOM DIOGO 100% AZAL and our DOM DIOGO 100% ARINTO.
Why do we mix wines?
It's true that nature gives very beautiful results with one primary element. But blending two elements, blending two wines, or blending two parcels, will give a different result that is just as interesting, if not more so. Mixing several wines in different proportions will result in a different taste.

In this way, blending allows the producer to offer wines with different profiles to people who don't have the same preferences and who have a lot of fun discovering new grape varieties, new flavors and new sensations.
