This grape variety gives rise to a very popular wine in Minho and the Vinho Verde region, usually known as Espadal. In any case, its cultivation does not extend to the entire wine-growing area, but is concentrated in the valleys of the Lima, Cávado, Ave and Tâmega rivers. Like Vinhão, its expression is essentially regional and it doesn't have a wide distribution "abroad". It is considered to be a very productive grape variety, with large, long bunches and late ripening, requiring many hours of heat to ripen, a tendency that has been attenuated today by modern viticulture techniques and the progressive abandonment of vineyards in borders or branches. Some of the other names by which it is known are curious, firstly in Basto, "Padeira", but also in other areas, using such peculiar names as "Farinhoto", "Nevoeiro" or "Tinta dos Pobres". The latter is probably due to its clear must, which produces ruby-colored wines; it also has a low sugar concentration and high acidity.
At Quinta da Raza we use the Espadeiro grape variety to produce one of our most successful references on the export market, specifically Raza Rosé where, blended with Vinhão and Padeiro, it produces a fresh wine with red fruit aromas, perfect to accompany light meals.
