A grape variety with unquestionable origins in Minho, Vinhão is currently the most popular and widely planted red grape in the Vinho Verde region, although it is more widely grown in the Lima, Ave and Basto sub-regions, in the latter case, boosted by the Tâmega valley and its great thermal amplitudes, which allow its potential to be greatly exploited. Also known as Sousão, particularly in the Douro valley, which is used to give color, for example, to some Port wines, Vinhão produces wines with high acidity, vinous, full-bodied and intense red color, opaque to light. Color is, in fact, one of its main characteristics, and it is often considered to be a dyeing grape variety, although there is no consensus on this topic. In addition to the intense garnet red color, there are aromas with notes of wild berries, such as blackberry and raspberry.

At Quinta da Raza, the cultivation of Vinhão tries to reconcile modern techniques with tradition. Harvesting, exclusively by hand, takes place in the morning and in small boxes with a maximum capacity of 20 kg. Winemaking follows the traditional method, with treading in granite lagares, where alcoholic fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures. There are five wines in our portfolio with which you can enjoy this unique grape variety: Dom Diogo Vinhão and Raza Lagares, both single varietals; Raza Rosé and Raza Pet-Nat Rosé, rosé wines where Vinhão appears in a blend alongside Padeiro and Espadeiro and, finally, in one of the references of the Special Family Collection range, Quinta da Raza Vinha de Cerdeiredo, again in a blend and, this time, with a tremendous variety of traditional red grape varieties, such as Amaral, Borraçal, Azal Tinto or Rabo de Ovelha.
