Gouveio

Although it is an authorized grape variety for the Vinho Verde Region, Gouveio cultivation was, until relatively recently, limited to a few dozen vines, with a fundamentally experimental purpose and, as such, no commercial objectives. In any case, in other wine regions, such as Galicia - known as Godello, closely following the Minho version of Godelho - Gouveio is widely grown and is used both to create single-varietal wines and in blends with the Alvarinho, Loureiro and Trajadura grape varieties, among others. Gouveio is also found in some of the best white wines produced in the Douro. Despite the lack of any previous experience of this grape variety in the Basto sub-region, Quinta da Raza once again set out to innovate by grafting approximately one hectare of this variety onto the special Lamelas Vineyard, which is arranged in levels and where the typical granite rocky substrate gives way to schist soil, putting the plants' resilience to the test. In the end, the results couldn't have been better; Gouveio proved to be extremely versatile, with an excellent alcohol-acidity ratio and great potential for aging in vats and bottles. Its excellence and rarity - production is restricted to one hectare - lead us to reserve this grape variety for two references in the Special Family Collection range, firstly in the Quinta da Raza Vinha de Lamelas monovarietal and in the very limited 2nd edition of the Family Collection, where it combines perfectly with Alvarinho and Avesso.
