Along with Azal, it is another of the emblematic grape varieties of the Basto sub-region. In times gone by, it was called Padeiro de Basto, a name that has since been removed in order to avoid confusion with the sub-region itself.
Although it is currently enjoying a period of great brilliance, the truth is that it didn't always enjoy such a privilege. The pale color of its must by Vinho Verde Red standards meant that this variety was gradually abandoned, leading to a large decrease in the number of plants. It was up to Quinta da Raza and its owner, Diogo Teixeira Coelho, to recover it by accepting, in the last decade of the last century, the challenge launched at the time by the Northern Regional Directorate of Agriculture to plant some Padeiro vines, thus avoiding its extinction. Starting with just one hectare at the time, the grape variety experienced a rapid revitalization phase, especially for the production of rosé wines, since what it lacked in color it made up for in aroma and harmony. In terms of aromas, raspberries and wild strawberries are some of the flavours provided by the wines of this variety, from which we make our Dom Diogo Padeiro single varietal, which has been winning prizes in national and international competitions and is widely recognized by consumers. The expansion of the area initially dedicated to Padeiro has allowed it to be diversified and used more widely, starting with blends, making its presence felt in Raza Rosé and also in the Nat range, in Raza Pet-Nat Rosé, which has a fine, persistent bubble and is highly refreshing.
