Alongside Azal, Padeiro is another emblematic grape variety of the Basto sub-region. In times past, it was designated as Padeiro de Basto, a name that was later removed to avoid confusion with the sub-region itself.
Experiencing a period of great revival today, the truth is that it has not always enjoyed such a privilege. The pale color of its must for the standards of Red Vinho Verde led to this grape variety being gradually abandoned, resulting in a significant decrease in the number of plants. . It was up to Quinta da Raza and its owner, Diogo Teixeira Coelho, to recover it by accepting the challenge launched by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture of the North to plant some Padeiro vines in the late 20th century, thereby avoiding its extinction. Starting, at the time, with just one hectare, the grape variety underwent a phase of rapid revitalization, especially for the production of rosé wines since what it lacked in color, it had in aroma and harmony. Regarding aromas, raspberries and wild strawberries are some of the characteristics provided by the wines from this grape variety, from which we make our single-varietal Dom Diogo Padeiro, which has been winning awards in national and international competitions and widely recognized by consumers. The expansion of the area initially dedicated to Padeiro allowed for its diversification and greater use, particularly in blends, being present in Raza Rosé and also in the Nat range, in Raza Pet-Nat Rosé, with fine and persistent bubbles, and highly refreshing.
